A team of nurses from the Infant Department of the C.U.H. visited third and fourth class yesterday. The three nurses were called Ria, Rachael and Emma and they taught us about blood and the brain.

                                                          The Circulatory System: 

The circulatory system, also called the cardiovascular system or the vascular system, is an organ system that permits blood to circulate and transport nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, and blood cells to and from the cells in the body to provide nourishment and help in fighting diseases.

We learned that red blood cells carry O2 around the body.

White Blood cells create antibodies and help fight infection. They are part of our immune system. .

The nurses asked us questions about blood.Then they gave us microscopes and we looked at blood kindly donated by Rachael! We were then given  a piece of paper with plasma on it. We dipped it into water and watched it change colours. After that the nurses gave us fake samples of blood that were frozen in dry ice at -80 degrees.

The Brain

We also learned about the brain. The brain sends messages through nerves. The brain is the only organ that learns about itself and it is divided into multiple segments. One third of the brain is dedicated to sight. Electricity travels along neurons and nerves. Two of your fists tightened and put together is the actual size of your brain!
